INDIANAPOLIS, IN – A tragic shooting incident in Indianapolis has led to the conviction of 50-year-old Michael Hendricks, who pleaded guilty to two counts of murder following a violent dispute over a debt. The altercation, which unfolded on March 28, resulted in the deaths of James McGuire, 48, and David Doty, also 48.
Police responded to a call on the 1300 block of Riley Place, where they discovered Doty critically injured outside a residence. He was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries later. Inside the home, authorities found McGuire, who had already passed away, pronounced dead at the scene.
Witnesses on the scene provided critical information that led officers to identify Hendricks as the suspect. Community members directed police to the intersection of Prospect Street and S. Emerson Avenue, where Hendricks was spotted.
Officer Tieken confronted Hendricks, instructing him to show his hands. Ignoring the commands, Hendricks attempted to flee, drawing a firearm and aiming it at the officer. Officer Tieken responded by discharging his weapon, striking Hendricks, who was then transported to the hospital in stable condition.
The firearm Hendricks used was later found to be unloaded, with a magazine inserted and the slide locked. No officers or bystanders were injured during the incident.
In August, Hendricks admitted in court to the murders, revealing that the altercation stemmed from a $40 debt. He was sentenced to 90 years in the Indiana Department of Correction.
This case underscores the tragic consequences of violence and highlights the swift response of law enforcement in apprehending the suspect. The community remains shaken by the events, as the families of the victims seek closure.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department continues to work closely with the community to prevent such incidents and ensure public safety. The swift resolution of this case offers some solace to those affected by the tragedy.
