Police said the 50-year-old man was wounded after allegedly pursuing the officer and pulling alongside his stopped vehicle.
SAN ANTONIO, Texas — An off-duty San Antonio police officer shot a 50-year-old man Saturday after what police described as an escalating road-rage confrontation near Northeast Loop 410 and Airport Boulevard.
The shooting happened around 5 p.m. Aug. 22 after the officer told investigators that another driver began acting aggressively and chasing him, according to the San Antonio Police Department. Police said the encounter continued as the vehicles traveled through the North Side area near San Antonio International Airport.
According to the police account, the other driver crossed multiple lanes of traffic and struck another vehicle before pulling alongside the officer’s stopped vehicle. The officer told investigators he believed the man was about to produce a firearm. Police said the officer then retrieved his own weapon and fired at the man’s vehicle.
Authorities have not publicly released information showing whether investigators recovered a firearm from the wounded man or his vehicle. Police also have not identified either the officer or the man who was shot. The officer’s stated belief that the other driver was reaching for a gun remains part of the account being examined by investigators.
The wounded driver left the scene after the shooting, police said. Emergency crews later responded to a residence for a report of a person with a gunshot wound and located the 50-year-old man there. He had been shot in the upper body and was taken to a hospital with injuries that police described as not life-threatening.
The off-duty officer called police to report the shooting and remained at the scene until responding officers arrived, according to police. Authorities have not announced any arrest or criminal charge connected with the confrontation.
The sequence described by police places several actions under review, including the alleged pursuit, the collision with another vehicle and the circumstances immediately before the officer opened fire. Police have not released additional details about the third vehicle that was reportedly struck or whether anyone in that vehicle was injured.
