North Carolina Resident Among Those Affected in Nationwide Listeria Outbreak Linked to Deli Meats

A resident of North Carolina has fallen ill as part of a growing listeriosis outbreak that spans across multiple states and is potentially linked to deli meats, officials from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported on Friday. The wave of illness has led to hospitalizations in 12 states and is believed to be linked to meats commonly sliced at deli counters.

According to data gathered by the CDC from May 29 to July 5, a total of 28 people have been confirmed as infected with the strain of Listeria responsible for the sickness. Consumers who reported consuming deli-sliced turkey and liverwurst from supermarkets and grocery store delis represent the majority of these cases. Sadly, the outbreak has resulted in fatalities, with one death recorded in Illinois and another in New Jersey.

As the investigation continues, the CDC has yet to determine the specific source of the Listeria. However, the spread of infection across New York, Maryland, Georgia, Massachusetts, Missouri, New Jersey, Virginia, Illinois, Minnesota, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin highlights a common thread in the reported cases.

Health authorities have raised concern that the actual number of affected individuals may be higher than what has been reported. Listeriosis, caused by the bacteria Listeria monocytogenes, is known for its potentially serious health implications, particularly amongst those who are pregnant, over 65 years of age, or have weakened immune systems.

Given the serious nature of the disease, which can lead to symptoms including fever, muscle aches, and neurological issues such as confusion and loss of balance, the CDC advises particular caution. They recommend that at-risk populations avoid consuming deli meats from the counter unless they are reheated to an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit. Additionally, diligent cleaning of refrigerators, containers, and surfaces that have come into contact with deli meat is recommended to prevent contamination.

This health scare emerges in the wake of a separate food safety concern, where a voluntary recall was issued by Dole for salad kits due to potential listeria contamination. These consecutive incidents highlight ongoing challenges and the critical need for stringent safety protocols in food handling and preparation.

Health officials continue to monitor the situation closely while advocating for heightened awareness and preventive measures among the public to curb further spread of the infection. As investigations into the exact cause and broader impacts of this outbreak continue, adherence to recommended safety practices remains a top priority.
