Athens, Greece — Authorities are investigating a significant explosion that rocked a shuttered nightclub in the Ilisia district late Tuesday night. The blast, which occurred at the “Jacky O” nightclub on Michalakopoulou Street, did not result in any injuries, but it caused notable property damage.
A police spokeswoman, Konstantina Dimoglidou, confirmed on Wednesday that the Directorate for Combating Organized Crime has taken charge of the investigation. She highlighted that every motive and suspect remains under consideration, noting the unusual nature of the incident given that the establishment had not been previously flagged by law enforcement.
The explosion took place around 10 p.m., with preliminary evaluations indicating that a powerful explosive was used. This led to a loud detonation that, while causing damage to the nightclub’s entrance and a nearby parked vehicle, did not compromise the overall structure. Dimoglidou expressed concern for public safety, stating that had pedestrians or passing motorists been present near the club at that time, they could have faced severe injuries.
Following the blast, investigators diligently combed the site for evidence, particularly surveillance footage which Dimoglidou described as being plentiful in the area. Police efforts are reportedly centering on four individuals who were observed behaving suspiciously in the vicinity just moments before the explosion.
Eyewitness accounts reveal a scene of confusion and alarm. A local resident recounted hearing “a deafening noise” that initially resembled thunder. The resident, who preferred to remain anonymous, described the immediate aftermath: “We ran outside and saw fire trucks arriving.” The nightclub has been closed for years, but speculation has grown about a potential reopening.
Authorities aim to clarify the circumstances surrounding the event and determine the intent behind the explosion. As the investigation unfolds, questions remain regarding the motivations of those involved and the implications for public safety in the area.
