Kolkata, India – The National Investigation Agency (NIA) faced a violent confrontation in the Bhupatinagar area, leading to allegations of misconduct and bribery. The NIA strongly refuted accusations of wrongdoing by the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and emphasized the lawful nature of their actions. The agency asserted that their operations were essential for investigating a fatal explosion caused by crude bombs in Naruabila village, West Bengal.
According to a statement released by the NIA, the incident in question, dating back to December 2022, has been under scrutiny following orders from the Calcutta High Court. The NIA revealed that their team encountered hostility from a mob while attempting to conduct searches in Naruabila village. This resulted in one NIA official sustaining injuries and damage to an official vehicle. Despite facing resistance, the agency maintained that they followed all procedures while making arrests.
Two individuals, Manobrata Jana and Bailicharan Maity, were apprehended by the NIA for their alleged involvement in the explosion case. The agency disclosed that the duo had repeatedly failed to cooperate with the investigation despite being summoned. Consequently, the Special NIA Court in Kolkata deemed the allegations against them to be of a serious nature.
The NIA highlighted that the searches were conducted with the presence of independent witnesses and under the protection of CRPF personnel. The arrests made during the operation were carried out in accordance with legal protocols. The agency reported that an aggressive crowd targeted their personnel during the arrest of Manobrata Jana, prompting them to file a complaint with the local police station.
While the NIA defended the legality of their actions, the incident has stirred controversy and allegations from various quarters. The agency refrained from addressing accusations of bribery against one of its officers, redirecting the focus towards the ongoing investigation into the explosion. The clash in Bhupatinagar serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in fulfilling their duties amidst public scrutiny and resistance.
