New Delhi: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) faced backlash after being accused of assaulting residents in West Bengal’s Bhupatinagar while conducting searches related to a blast case that occurred in December 2022. The NIA strongly denied the allegations, stating that its team was violently attacked by an unruly mob during the operation in Naruabila village.
The agency emphasized that the attack was unprovoked and aimed at obstructing the lawful duties of the NIA team. The searches were carried out at five locations with the presence of independent witnesses and under the security cover provided by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), including women constables.
Following the operation, the NIA successfully apprehended two key conspirators involved in the bomb blast case in East Midnapore district. The arrests were made in accordance with legal procedures, despite facing resistance from the mob while taking the accused to the Bhupatinagar police station for further processing.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee criticized the NIA, accusing the agency of working for the BJP and engaging in questionable tactics. Banerjee raised concerns about the timing of the arrests, claiming they were politically motivated to support the ruling party.
In response to the allegations, the NIA clarified that the aggressive crowd attacked its personnel and damaged an official vehicle during the arrest process. The agency emphasized that one of its officers was injured in the incident, leading them to file a police complaint seeking legal action against the assailants.
The NIA’s actions were validated by a special NIA court in Kolkata, which supported the agency’s investigation and granted permission to proceed expediently with the case. The court underscored the seriousness of the allegations and urged the NIA to carry out a thorough and proper investigation in line with legal protocols.
Overall, the clash between the NIA and the residents of Bhupatinagar has raised questions about the agency’s operations and its relationship with local communities, highlighting the challenges of conducting investigations in politically sensitive environments.
