New York, NY – Recently, new footage has surfaced showing actor Steve Buscemi moments before he was assaulted in New York City. Video obtained by CBS New York captured Buscemi walking on Third Avenue on May 8th, appearing to be browsing on his phone before being randomly punched by a passerby. The incident occurred around noon near East 27th Street.
Subsequently, the NYPD identified the suspect as 50-year-old Clifton Williams, who reportedly punched Buscemi unprovoked. The actor sustained injuries to his left eye, requiring medical attention for bruising, swelling, and bleeding. Buscemi’s publicist confirmed the incident, stating that while he is okay and grateful for the support, he is deeply saddened by the senseless act of violence in the city.
In a parallel incident, Buscemi’s “Boardwalk Empire” co-star Michael Stuhlbarg was also recently assaulted in New York. Stuhlbarg was allegedly struck in the head with a rock by a homeless man near Central Park in March. The perpetrator, Xavier Israel, was charged with assault in the second degree and had previous arrests for assault and robbery earlier in the year.
Before his acting career took off, Buscemi serves as a firefighter, following in the footsteps of his father’s advice. Despite finding success in Hollywood with notable roles in films like “Reservoir Dogs,” his parents remained uncertain about his future in the industry. Buscemi’s journey from firefighting to acting was a pivotal experience in his life, blending his passion for both professions.
Following the tragic events of 9/11, Buscemi returned to his old engine company to volunteer with first responders at Ground Zero. His contributions went unnoticed until a photograph surfaced in 2013, highlighting his dedication to the FDNY. Despite the emotional toll of his work at Ground Zero, Buscemi remains humble about his experiences and continues to support initiatives for firefighters and their families.
Reflecting on his service, Buscemi emphasized the importance of mental health awareness for firefighters and the challenges they face in seeking help. His commitment to honoring the memory of 9/11 responders and supporting the firefighting community has been a central part of his life beyond his acting career. Buscemi’s enduring dedication to his roots in firefighting serves as a testament to his character and commitment to service.
Lastly, in recognition of his contributions, Buscemi was honored with the keys to the city by Mayor Bill de Blasio in 2021. His legacy as a former firefighter turned actor exemplifies the resilience and compassion of New York’s first responders. Through his advocacy and support for firefighters, Buscemi continues to make a positive impact on the community and honor the memory of those affected by the events of 9/11.
