WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Byrd family of Winston-Salem is reeling from the sudden death of Jeanne Byrd, a loving mother who collapsed while on her way to celebrate her daughter Marlene’s high school graduation. The incident has cast a shadow over what was meant to be a joyous occasion, leaving family and friends in mourning.
Jeanne collapsed in the parking lot just before the ceremony. Her son, Mark Juan Matthews, was inside the venue when his aunt informed him of the emergency. He hurried to his mother’s side and performed CPR until paramedics arrived, but it was too late.
Reflecting on the traumatic experience, Mark Juan expressed the difficulty of witnessing his mother’s final moments. “It was a curse,” he shared, struggling to cope with the loss. The memory of his mother’s last breath is etched in his mind, making it hard to find peace.
Marlene, unaware of the unfolding events, received her diploma. Only afterward did a guidance counselor tell her about her mother’s condition, taking her to the hospital. Initially, Marlene thought it was a minor incident and did not grasp the severity of the situation.
In the wake of Jeanne’s passing, the family is focused on honoring her memory. Known for her energy and kindness, Jeanne was a supportive figure to many in the community. Mark Juan spoke of her as a safe haven for children and anyone in need of comfort.
The family plans to bury Jeanne in her hometown of Philadelphia and has launched a GoFundMe campaign to cover the expenses. The community is invited to contribute in memory of a woman who touched many lives.
