Seattle, Washington – A mother in Washington was taken into custody on Friday in connection with the tragic death of her 4-year-old son, who was discovered lifeless near a highway after vanishing earlier in the week.
Janet Garcia, the mother of the young boy, was charged with first- and second-degree murder, as well as assault of a child by the Everett police following the recovery of Ariel Garcia’s body along Interstate 5 on Thursday. Authorities also accused her of providing false and misleading information during their investigation.
According to reports, Janet Garcia had been labeled a person of interest shortly after a family member reported Ariel missing on Wednesday. During questioning by investigators, Garcia allegedly claimed that her son had fallen and hit his head earlier in the day. She stated that she had taken him to a hospital, but left due to a lengthy wait.
Furthermore, Garcia told detectives that she dropped Ariel off at a friend’s house in Seattle and was unaware of his whereabouts afterwards. Authorities revealed that a substantial amount of blood was found in the apartment where Garcia was residing in Everett, and she also had blood on her shirt at the time of her arrest.
Just days before Ariel’s disappearance, his grandmother had petitioned for legal guardianship, citing Garcia’s substance abuse problems which she believed impaired her ability to parent. The grandmother expressed concerns about Garcia’s deteriorating behavior, including violent outbursts, especially when under the influence of drugs.
In the weeks leading up to Ariel’s disappearance, Garcia’s behavior reportedly became more erratic, with instances of violence towards her children. The grandmother expressed fears for Ariel’s safety, stating, “I love my grandson and I want to protect him from whatever his mom is capable of when she is on drugs.”
It remains unclear whether Janet Garcia has secured legal representation or when she is scheduled to appear in court.
