LONDON, ENGLAND – In a tragic and unsettling case that has gripped East London, a mother has been convicted of murdering her two young sons by drowning them in a bathtub. The community is grappling with disbelief and sorrow following the verdict.
Cara Alexander, 47, was found guilty of killing her sons, 2-year-old Elijah and 5-year-old Marley, after their bodies were discovered tucked into bed by their father, Selvin Thomas. The incident occurred in December 2022, shortly after Alexander and Thomas ended their relationship.
As the court prepares for sentencing, psychiatric evaluations are being conducted to determine Alexander’s mental state at the time of the crime. Although she faces a potential life sentence, the results of these evaluations could play a role in the final decision. Her sentencing is scheduled for April at the Kingston Crown Court.
The couple had separated months before the tragedy, prompting Alexander to move to Dagenham with the children. Thomas, who was supposed to have custody of the boys for the weekend, became alarmed when Alexander did not contact him. Upon visiting their home, he was initially barred entry by Alexander, who claimed the boys were asleep.
Prosecutors revealed that Thomas discovered the children’s bodies after overcoming a barricade of toys at the door. The boys were found in their pajamas, cold and lifeless, in their shared bunk bed. In shock, Thomas confronted Alexander, accusing her of killing their sons.
Alexander was apprehended by authorities after attempting to flee the scene. During police interviews, she admitted to leaving the boys alone in the bathtub while she smoked cannabis and subsequently fell asleep. Despite her admission, she insisted she never meant to harm them.
The case has drawn significant attention, with a distressing 999 emergency call played for the jury, capturing Thomas’s anguish and Alexander’s attempt to escape. She was eventually detained after running through neighboring backyards.
As the community mourns the loss of two young lives, the case highlights the critical role of mental health assessments in legal proceedings. The tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences that can arise from untreated mental health issues.
