AUSTIN, TX – A young woman is in custody after authorities discovered her newborn abandoned in a dumpster at a North Austin apartment complex. Police arrested 22-year-old Nelly Denor Rivera Felipe, charging her with a felony after the distressing incident.
Court documents reveal that the infant was left in the dumpster for over 16 hours before being found by residents. Felipe reportedly gave birth in her apartment late Friday and, overwhelmed with fear and uncertainty, placed the newborn in a bucket and discarded it in the dumpster.
The following morning, Felipe returned to the same dumpster to dispose of more trash, unaware that her actions would soon be uncovered. By early afternoon, attentive residents discovered the infant and quickly alerted emergency services, ensuring the baby received the urgent care it needed.
The infant is now receiving continued medical attention and is reported to be in stable condition. Authorities are emphasizing the importance of seeking help in similar situations, highlighting Texas’ Safe Haven Law. This law allows parents to safely surrender infants under 60 days old at designated locations without facing prosecution.
Despite the availability of this law, Travis County has seen no safe surrenders this year, while the state has recorded 11. Officials urge parents to utilize these safe options to ensure the well-being of their children.
Felipe remains in the Travis County Jail with a bond set at $50,000. The case underscores the importance of community awareness and support systems for parents in crisis.
