Mother, adult son and dog found shot to death in home

Pierce County deputies recovered a firearm at the scene and said there were no outstanding suspects.

VAUGHN, Wash. — A woman, her adult son and the family dog were found dead from gunshot wounds inside a Key Peninsula home Tuesday afternoon after a man returned from work and called 911, according to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities said deputies arrived around 1:27 p.m. to the 7400 block of 185th Avenue NW, a rural stretch near Crescent Beach Road NW. Inside a bedroom, investigators found the woman and her son, described by relatives as 24, along with the dog. Detectives recovered a firearm. The sheriff’s office said the case appears confined to the home and that there are no outstanding suspects, but detectives have not released a motive. The Pierce County Medical Examiner will identify the victims and determine the manner of death after family notifications.

Deputies cordoned off the property for several hours while detectives documented the scene and interviewed the caller, who told investigators he discovered the bodies when he arrived home. Crime scene technicians photographed rooms and collected ballistic evidence as a tow truck removed a vehicle from the driveway for processing. “This is a tragic and very difficult scene,” a sheriff’s office spokesperson said at the location, adding that investigators were working methodically to establish a timeline.

Detectives emphasized that early findings point to a contained incident. They did not announce arrests and did not release the victims’ names. Officials said they recovered one firearm in the bedroom but did not say who it belonged to or who fired it. The sheriff’s office planned to canvass nearby homes for security video showing movements to and from the residence before and after the 1:27 p.m. 911 call. Investigators were also seeking digital records from phones and any recent calls for service linked to the address.

The Key Peninsula, a wooded area southwest of Gig Harbor, has seen sporadic high-profile investigations, but homicides remain relatively uncommon compared with urban Pierce County. The sheriff’s office said patrol deputies were first on scene within minutes due to a unit nearby, then turned the case over to major crimes detectives. The medical examiner typically releases identifications within days once next of kin are notified. Officials said autopsies will clarify the number of shots fired and the sequence of injuries.

Detectives said they will review shell casings, trajectory marks and gunshot residue to piece together what happened inside the bedroom before the caller returned home. They also intend to analyze phone records and social media activity from the hours leading up to the discovery. As of late Tuesday, the sheriff’s office did not detail a motive. Officials said updates will be posted after the medical examiner completes examinations and once investigators close out key interviews.

By nightfall, crime scene tape still ringed the house as deputies guarded the driveway and traffic slowly moved along the two-lane road. A few neighbors watched from a distance while investigators packed equipment and loaded labeled evidence bags into vehicles. “It’s heartbreaking,” the spokesperson said, thanking residents for patience during the road closures and urging anyone with relevant home surveillance to contact detectives.

The investigation remains active. The medical examiner is expected to release the victims’ names and causes of death later this week, and the sheriff’s office said its next update will come after autopsies and forensic testing are complete.
