JOPLIN, Mo. — An unsettling series of incidents during the recent Independence Day celebrations has prompted a thorough investigation by the Missouri Division of Fire Safety. The events, which involved several fires and explosions linked to fireworks, resulted in the deaths of three individuals and left several others severely injured. State Fire Marshal Tim Bean described the occurrences as among the most tragic in recent memory.
Between July 3 and 4, officials reported five separate incidents across the state tied to suspected mishandling of fireworks. The most severe included a shed explosion in Joplin that claimed the life of a 47-year-old man and left a juvenile girl with serious injuries. Investigators are looking into whether fireworks played a role in the incident.
In Buckner, a house fire on July 4 led to the fatalities of a 13-year-old girl and an adult. At least one other person remains hospitalized as a result of the fire, which originated on a back deck where fireworks had been discharged.
Hannibal faced its own disaster when fireworks ignited a blaze that affected a four-unit residential structure. Firefighters were able to contain the fire, but damage was significant.
A separate garage explosion in Sibley injured three individuals who suffered serious burns. Authorities are assessing whether a collection of consumer fireworks contributed to this explosion. Additionally, a large private fireworks display in Leadwood resulted in an explosion that injured six people, including an elderly woman.
“These incidents serve as a stark reminder that consumer fireworks are dangerous materials, not toys,” Bean said, urging residents to exercise extreme caution. He highlighted the continued risks associated with improperly handled, stored, or homemade fireworks and reiterated essential safety measures. These include not lighting fireworks indoors, having water readily available during use, and avoiding the relighting of malfunctioning devices.
The Division of Fire Safety is collaborating with local fire departments to further investigate each occurrence. Officials warn that there may be additional incidents related to fireworks that have yet to be reported, underscoring the potential dangers that linger beyond the holiday celebrations.
As July 4th festivities continue to resonate in the memories of those affected, the state aims to promote a focus on safety, potentially preventing further accidents as fireworks remain in the hands of eager users.
