JACKSON, Miss. – A Meridian woman has pleaded guilty to a federal charge of siphoning social security benefits totaling over $25,000 from two elderly people, a crime that could lead her to a decade behind bars.
Identified as 46-year-old Taruars Santae Grace, the woman conceded in court that she unlawfully redirected social security retirement payments from the intended elderly beneficiaries into her own bank accounts.
Court filings indicate that Grace knowingly used the funds for personal expenses, actions for which she had no legal consent. Her acknowledgment of the theft came during her plea on Wednesday, where she admitted to one count of theft of government funds.
The case saw Grace indicted by a federal grand jury in August, leading up to her recent guilty plea which could potentially send her to federal prison for up to 10 years. Additionally, she could face a monetary penalty as high as $250,000.
A federal district court judge will determine Grace’s sentence on February 11, 2025. The sentencing will take into account the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines, along with other relevant statutory considerations.
The complex investigation that led to Grace’s guilty plea was spearheaded by the U.S. Attorney’s Office of the Southern District of Mississippi, under U.S. Attorney Todd W. Gee, along with the investigative efforts of the Social Security Administration Office of Inspector General’s Atlanta Field Division, headed by Special Agent in Charge Rodregas ‘Rod’ Owens.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Kimberly T. Purdie represents the prosecution, involved in bringing the particulars of this case of exploitation of vulnerable individuals to light.
This legal action emphasizes the ongoing effort by federal agencies to protect the integrity of social security funds and bring justice to those who exploit the system. The theft from programs designed to assist elderly individuals poses significant harm to the victims and to the efficacy of social welfare systems designed to support them.
This case further illustrates the proactive measures being taken by federal authorities to curb fraud and stringent action against those who misappropriate government funds, ensuring such resources reach their rightful recipients and serve their intended purpose.
