Lagos, Nigeria — A major multi-vehicle collision involving nine vehicles on the Danco section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway miraculously resulted in no fatalities or injuries among the 32 people involved, authorities confirmed on Monday.
The accident occurred when a truck, heavily laden with perishable goods, lost control due to excessive speeding and overturned, obstructing a portion of the highway. The ensuing chaos led to a Sino truck, carrying granite, colliding with a Sienna minivan from behind, triggering a domino effect that impacted several other vehicles.
Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) Commandant, Seni Ogunyemi, detailed that the sequence of collisions was a direct result of high-speed driving and a lack of caution by some drivers. The overturned Scania truck was the initial catalyst for the multi-vehicle incident, which subsequently embroiled other road users including personal and commercial vehicles.
Vehicles identified in the wreck included varied models ranging from Ford and Nissan jeeps to a Toyota Highlander and a Mazda bus. Other vehicles reported by TRACE were a Toyota bus, another Sinotruck, a second Scania truck, and a Toyota Camry.
Despite the scale of the accident and the potential for severe casualties, it was confirmed that all 20 adult males and 12 adult females involved escaped unscathed. “Number of occupants: 32 (20 adult males, 12 adult females). Nil number of injured and nil number of deaths,” Ogunyemi stated, highlighting the fortunate outcome.
The quick response of TRACE operatives, supported by the efforts of local police from Shagamu, played a crucial role in managing the aftermath of the accident. Traffic flow, which was significantly disrupted following the collision, returned to normal later in the day thanks to their coordinated efforts.
This incident underscores ongoing concerns about road safety on Nigeria’s highways, particularly regarding speeding and the need for more rigorous enforcement of traffic laws. It also highlights the remarkable escapes that can occur even in the most perilous of road traffic incidents.
Road safety experts continue to advocate for stricter adherence to speed limits and more comprehensive driver education to prevent similar accidents in the future. As road networks continue to expand and vehicular traffic increases, the importance of regulatory compliance and responsible driving becomes even more critical to prevent potential disasters on the road.
Local authorities are expected to review the circumstances of this incident as part of broader efforts to enhance traffic safety and enforcement on major highways. The focus will likely include examining the condition of heavy-duty vehicles on the roads and ensuring they are roadworthy to minimize the risk of such accidents.
For now, the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway has returned to normal, but this event serves as a stark reminder of the fine line between routine trips and potential road tragedies.
