Minneapolis, Minnesota, mourns the loss of two individuals, including a heroic police officer, following a tragic shooting incident that unfolded in a south Minneapolis neighborhood. The incident led to a swift response from multiple law enforcement agencies in the area.
According to Minneapolis Police Department Assistant Chief Katie Blackwell, the shooting occurred near an apartment complex in the Whittier neighborhood. Upon arriving at the scene, police officers were met with gunfire which resulted in a deadly exchange of bullets.
Tragically, one officer lost his life while trying to aid civilians during the chaotic event. Identified as Jamal Mitchell, the 28-year-old officer was hailed as a “courageous hero” by Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey. Mitchell’s bravery and selfless actions were commended, particularly highlighting his previous heroic act of rescuing an elderly couple from a burning building in February 2023.
In addition to the officer’s death, two other individuals were also fatally shot, while several others sustained injuries during the incident. The suspect involved in the shooting was wounded and later pronounced dead at the scene.
