Orlando, Florida – Product recalls continue to make headlines across the United States, with laundry detergent packets, garment steamers, and citronella candles being among the latest products flagged for safety concerns. This surge in recalls comes as a cause for alarm, as thousands of consumers nationwide potentially face risks of injury or harm due to defective products on the market.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service, and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission have all been active in issuing recalls this week for various products that pose potential dangers to consumers. From laundry detergent packets that could harm children to garment steamers responsible for numerous burn incidents, the range of problematic products is extensive.
Among the major recalls this week is the recall of millions of Tide Pods, Gain Flings, Ace Pods, and Ariel Pods liquid laundry detergent packets. These products were flagged for packaging defects that could potentially lead to ingestion by children or cause skin and eye injuries. Federal regulators have urged consumers to check their purchases made between September and February, as around 8.2 million defective packets were distributed across various retail stores and online platforms.
Additionally, nearly 2 million Black+Decker garment steamers have been recalled due to burn hazards resulting from hot water leaks during use. The recall includes units involved in a previous November 2022 recall, with reports of over 300 incidents, including 82 burn injuries and seven second-degree burns. The steamers were sold through major retailers such as Walmart, Target, Amazon, and Bed Bath & Beyond from June 2021 to February 2024.
Moreover, over 270,000 adult portable bed rails have been re-recalled after two additional deaths were reported following an initial December 2021 recall. These bed rails pose a serious entrapment hazard and risk of asphyxiation, leading to tragic incidents where users became trapped between the rail and the mattress. The CPSC has advised consumers to discontinue use of the recalled Endurance Hand Bed Rails, sold from October 2006 to December 2021 at medical supply stores and online platforms.
The safety concerns extend to Walmart’s Mainstays Electric Mini Choppers, with over 50,000 units being recalled nationwide for causing lacerations that have injured at least five individuals, two of whom required stitches. The unexpected activation of the chopper blade during assembly or use poses a slicing hazard to users, prompting the recall of these products sold from August 2022 to October 2023.
Lastly, BJ’s Wholesale Club has recalled 90,000 Berkley Jensen Citronella 72-inch Tiki Torches due to burn hazards, with instances of torch tops breaking or falling off while lit, resulting in burn injuries to consumers. The candles were sold at BJ’s locations and online platforms from January 2015 to November 2023, urging consumers to exercise caution with these potentially dangerous products.
