ALPINE TOWNSHIP, MI – A man is facing multiple charges, including murder, after a shooting incident over the weekend left one woman dead and two others injured. Authorities have identified the suspect as 42-year-old Gilberto Hernandez Mendez, who was arraigned this afternoon.
The tragic event unfolded early Saturday morning in a shared residence in Alpine Township. Mendez is accused of opening fire during a domestic dispute, resulting in the death of one woman and non-life-threatening injuries to two others, reportedly his girlfriend and her sister. The deceased is said to be the mother of the injured women.
Kent County deputies, with assistance from local police and the Michigan State Police, apprehended Mendez after a brief manhunt. The suspect reportedly attempted to shoot another male resident, but his firearm malfunctioned, allowing him to escape temporarily.
Mendez faces an 11-count felony complaint, including charges of open murder and assault with intent to murder. This was the first time police had been called to this particular address, according to Kent County Undersheriff Brian Muir.
Court documents reveal that Mendez has used multiple aliases over the past 15 years while working as a self-employed painter in the area. Further complicating his legal situation, Mendez is on an immigration hold, as he has been deported previously.
The incident has drawn attention to the potential dangers posed by individuals with a history of violence. The local sheriff’s office emphasized the threat such actions pose to community safety.
As the legal proceedings continue, the community mourns the loss of life and grapples with the aftermath of this violent episode. Authorities are urging anyone with additional information about the case to come forward.
