MESA, Ariz. – A local woman is facing serious charges after allegedly engaging in brutal acts of animal cruelty, including the deaths of multiple dogs. The case came to light after disturbing entries from a journal detailing the abuse were discovered by Mesa police.
Brook Scalero, 42, was arrested and charged with animal cruelty last week. The investigation began when a former roommate, upset over the unexplained death of her dog Gus while under Scalero’s care, submitted the suspect’s journal to authorities. Within its pages, Scalero purportedly confessed to the torture and killing of five dogs.
The events escalated in November when police were alerted to the gruesome details described in Scalero’s writings, which also included her name, address, and email. Further evidence surfaced linking Scalero to more victims.
One particular case involved a Maltese mix named Pepe. Records show that in May, Scalero had agreed to purchase Pepe for $500 from a local animal rescue organization, P.A.W.S. for the Cause, but failed to complete the payment. Months later, the dog was found deceased in a dumpster near a local veterinary hospital, prompting further investigation.
Medical examination of the canine remains confirmed injuries consistent with abuse. The microchip embedded in the dog identified him as Griffin, a name different from that given by Scalero, raising suspicions of deceit on her part regarding the dog’s true identity.
In an unsettling turn, the journal also referenced physical abuse toward a 14-month-old infant, though specific details about this aspect of the investigation remain under wraps as police continue to investigate.
Scalero initially dismissed the journal entries as mere fiction when questioned by authorities. However, subsequent police interviews led to her confession of the animals’ mistreatment and deaths as described in the diary.
The community reacted with horror and sadness to the case, with some residents, like Sydney Pileggi, taking to social media to express their grief and outrage. Pileggi was instrumental in discovering the body of Pepe behind Scalero’s apartment, a grim find that corroborated the journal’s claims.
Authorities are progressing with the case, ensuring thorough investigation and appropriate legal action against Scalero. She faces multiple felony and misdemeanor charges, including two counts of felony animal cruelty.
