COLUMBUS, Ohio — A significant blaze erupted from a tanker truck carrying thousands of gallons of fuel on Sunday afternoon, causing major disruptions near the intersection of State Route 161 and Interstate 270. The explosion occurred around 1:39 p.m., sending thick plumes of smoke visible for miles as emergency responders rushed to the scene.
Columbus Fire Battalion Chief Jeff Geitter confirmed that firefighters swiftly contained the fire, although officials advised residents living east of the incident to keep their windows shut to avoid inhaling smoke. Fortunately, the driver escaped physical injuries but was taken to Riverside Medical Center as a precautionary measure.
The explosion prompted local law enforcement to close nearby highway ramps for an extended timeframe, and traffic in the area was heavily impacted, with motorists rerouted away from the scene. Meanwhile, the Ohio Department of Transportation has deployed personnel to assist with managing traffic and evaluating potential damage.
Initial assessments indicate that the blast may have compromised a nearby bridge, prompting ODOT to schedule an inspection. If damage is confirmed, the bridge could face long-term closure.
John Glenn International Airport officials reported no disruptions to airport operations, ensuring that flights and other activities continued unaffected.
Authorities are actively monitoring the situation and intend to provide updates as more information becomes available. Residents and motorists are urged to remain cautious and stay informed about the evolving circumstances surrounding the incident.
