A food delivery driver remained at the scene after the gunfire, while another man accused in the robbery attempt fled.
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Police are searching for a second person accused of taking part in an attempted robbery of a food delivery driver after the encounter ended with another alleged suspect fatally shot Thursday afternoon in a Miami Gardens neighborhood.
The shooting was reported about 1:41 p.m. in the 20300 block of Northwest 34th Court. Miami Gardens police responding to the scene found an adult man wounded on the ground. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue airlifted him to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. His identity had not been released as of Friday morning.
Police said their preliminary investigation identified the man who was shot as a possible suspect in the confrontation. Separate reporting citing a source familiar with the investigation said two men had tried to rob a food delivery driver near Northwest 203rd Street and Northwest 35th Avenue before gunfire erupted. The second alleged suspect left the area, and police were searching for him.
The delivery driver stayed at the scene and was detained by officers without incident, police said. Authorities had not announced that the driver was arrested or charged with a crime. Investigators also had not publicly identified him or detailed what happened immediately before the shooting.
Witnesses described hearing several shots in rapid succession. Nearby residents also said the driver spoke with neighbors after the shooting and asked whether their security cameras had captured the confrontation. According to one neighbor, the driver said he had been robbed and was trying to document his claim that he acted in self-defense.
That account remained part of an active investigation rather than a final police finding. Authorities had not publicly released a full sequence of events or announced whether investigators had determined who displayed or fired a weapon first. Police also had not identified the second person accused of participating in the alleged robbery.
Video from the neighborhood showed the immediate aftermath as police and firefighters converged on the residential street. Aerial footage showed a handgun in the roadway and more than a dozen evidence markers around a vehicle connected to the investigation. The vehicle was later towed as investigators processed the scene.
Witnesses said the wounded man appeared to have been wearing a black ski mask. Cellphone video showed him on the ground while emergency crews responded. Police have described him as a possible suspect but had not publicly released his name or announced additional information about his alleged role before his death.
The search for the second alleged suspect remained unresolved Friday morning. Authorities had not announced an arrest, and no charging decision involving the delivery driver had been made public. The fatal shooting remained under investigation by Miami Gardens police.
