A Maryland dentist and oral surgeon has been sentenced to 45 years in prison for the murder of his 25-year-old girlfriend, who fatally overdosed on anesthesia medications administered by him. James Michael Ryan, 50, set up an at-home IV station for his girlfriend, Sarah Harris, and supplied her with addictive anesthesia medications. State Circuit Court Judge Cheryl A. McCally issued the sentence, stating that Ryan’s significant contribution to Harris’ death and his exploitation of a position of power over her warranted a sentence exceeding state sentencing guidelines.
Ryan was found guilty of second-degree murder, involuntary manslaughter, possession with intent to distribute midazolam, and distribution of ketamine and diazepam. Harris passed away from ketamine and diazepam intoxication, and various vials of the drugs, hypodermic needles, syringes, and tourniquets were found at their home.
The couple had met when Harris visited Ryan’s office for a medical procedure in 2020 and later began working for him. They began dating in January 2021 and moved in together permanently in the summer of the same year. Despite concerns from her family about the relationship, Harris continued to live with Ryan until her death.
Text messages showed that Harris had asked Ryan to provide her with drugs from his medical practice, and Ryan instructed her on their usage. Furthermore, Ryan had administered ketamine to Harris while she was asleep, according to testimony during the sentencing hearing.
Ryan claimed that Harris was “okay” when he went to bed on the night of the incident, but she was found unresponsive the next day. Despite efforts to save her, she passed away from the overdose.
The tragic case highlights the dangers of drug misuse and the importance of holding individuals accountable for their actions in contributing to the overdose deaths of others. The sentencing serves as a reminder of the devastating impact of opioid and drug abuse, as well as the need for stricter measures to prevent such tragedies.
