Indianapolis, Ind. — Former NFL quarterback Mark Sanchez is in stable condition after being stabbed multiple times early Saturday morning. The incident occurred approximately 30 minutes after midnight in downtown Indianapolis, where Sanchez was among two men injured during a disturbance, according to reports.
Authorities were alerted to the scene and transported Sanchez to a local hospital, where he was initially listed in critical condition. The specific details surrounding the attack, including the motive and location of the injuries, remain unclear as police continue their investigation.
In a statement, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department indicated that they were probing a confrontation between two individuals. Officials characterized the incident as isolated and not a random act of violence. “One individual sustained injuries consistent with stab wounds, while the other suffered lacerations,” the statement noted.
Representatives for Sanchez expressed gratitude towards the medical team providing care and requested privacy for the former athlete and his family during this difficult time. Sanchez, who is now a commentator for Fox Sports, had traveled to Indianapolis to cover the Colts-Raiders game set to take place on Sunday.
The 38-year-old Sanchez, a Southern California native, had a distinguished NFL career spanning eight seasons, primarily with the New York Jets. He was drafted fifth overall in 2009 from the University of Southern California and gained notoriety for leading the Jets to consecutive AFC Championship games in 2009 and 2010. After stints with the Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas Cowboys, and Washington Commanders, he transitioned to a broadcasting career.
Sanchez joined Fox as a college football analyst in 2019 and later took on roles as a color commentator for NFL games. He married his wife, Perry, in 2023 and is a father of three.
As investigators move forward, the case will be referred to the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office for a charging decision, per the police statement. Local media outlets have yet to provide additional updates on the situation as inquiries continue.
