BELLE PLAINE, Minn. — A manhunt continues for Vance Boelter, the suspect in a shooting spree that left one Minnesota lawmaker dead and another injured. For a second day, authorities have not apprehended Boelter, who is thought to be armed and dangerous. A nationwide arrest warrant has been issued for the 57-year-old.
Investigators discovered Boelter’s vehicle early Sunday morning in a rural area near his home in Green Isle. The car, abandoned just a few miles from his residence, had evidence relevant to the ongoing investigation, although officials did not disclose specifics. Drew Evans, superintendent of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, emphasized the seriousness of the situation and confirmed that Boelter remains elusive.
The violence broke out early Saturday in Brooklyn Park, where former Democratic House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, were killed. Meanwhile, State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were shot at their home in Champlin, approximately nine miles away. Authorities are keeping a close watch on Boelter, who reportedly impersonated a police officer during the attack.
Yvette Hoffman later expressed gratitude for the community’s support through social media, stating both she and her husband are recovering from their injuries. She reported that her husband had sustained nine gunshot wounds while she had been shot eight times. They both emphasized their shock over the tragic loss of the Hortmans.
Evans disclosed that Boelter had a mask and a cowboy hat when he allegedly posed as law enforcement during the shootings. Family members of the suspect have cooperated with investigators, but they are not in custody. Searching efforts are extensive; over 100 officers, including specialized units, have been deployed to the area, as tips from the public pour in, surpassing 400.
Community leaders are shaken by the audacity of the violence, especially as political tensions rise nationally. Flowers and memorial notes have been placed at the Minnesota State Capitol in memory of the victims, highlighting the deep impact of this event on local residents. The state continues to mourn, with many expressing their heartbreak and disbelief at the targeted attacks on public figures.
In an alarming twist, authorities uncovered a list of names in writings found within Boelter’s vehicle, which included prominent political figures and advocates for abortion rights. While Evans noted these findings, he clarified that they do not indicate a political manifesto but rather a collection of thoughts and lists.
Boelter is known to have previously served on a state workforce development board with Hoffman, yet the extent of their relationship remains unclear. Following the shootings, Boelter reportedly sent messages to friends indicating remorse but did not elaborate on his actions.
As law enforcement intensifies their search, public officials are taking precautions. Warnings have been relayed to other state lawmakers, and demonstrations have been adjusted in light of the violence. Governor Tim Walz publicly remembered Hortman as a vital leader in Minnesota’s political landscape, underscoring the loss felt across the state.
As the investigation unfolds, the community waits anxiously for updates, hoping for both justice and safety in the wake of this tragic violence.
