San Francisco — Nearly two years after Paul Pelosi was violently attacked in the home he shares with his wife, former U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, the assailant, David DePape, has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. This sentence follows a previous 30-year federal prison term handed down last year for the same incident, underscoring the severity of the attack that occurred on October 28, 2022.
During his final court appearance, DePape spent over 30 minutes discussing various conspiracy theories but did not offer an apology to the Pelosi family. His ramblings included unfounded claims about the 9/11 attacks and allegations of a stolen 2020 presidential election.
Reacting to the sentence, the Pelosi family expressed hope that the harsh penalty would serve as a deterrent against future acts of political violence. They emphasized the importance of respecting the safety of public officials and their families, stating that such violence should never be “tolerated, minimized, or condoned.”
Legal experts noted that by seeking the maximum sentence, both state and federal prosecutors aimed to prevent any possibility of DePape’s early release, especially if his case were to be overturned on appeal. The attack left Paul Pelosi with significant physical injuries, including severe head trauma and impaired motor functions, which he detailed in a poignant letter to the court. He described the ongoing physical and psychological toll the incident has taken on him, including frequent migraines, sound sensitivity, and challenges with mobility.
District Attorney Brooke Jenkins expressed hope that the sentencing would bring some closure to not only the Pelosi family but also to a nation shocked by the violence.
