LAS VEGAS, Nevada – Video footage from inside a Nevada courtroom captured the shocking moment when a man launched himself at Clark County District Court Judge Mary Kay Halthus and violently attacked her on the bench during a sentencing hearing.
The incident occurred just as Judge Halthus was preparing to hand down a sentence to Deobra Redden, a three-time felon facing charges of attempted battery with substantial bodily harm. Redden, 30, could be heard yelling expletives before leaping over furniture and launching his attack on the judge, throwing her to the floor and prompting an American flag to crash to the dais. Several men rushed to the judge’s aid, eventually managing to restrain Redden.
According to court documents, Redden had previously threatened to cause substantial bodily harm to another individual. After a competency determination, he had pleaded guilty to the charges but then missed a court appearance, leading to a bench warrant for his arrest.
Following the attack, Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson released a statement thanking those who came to Judge Halthus’s aid. “Thank God the judge is okay,” Wolfson said. “Thank God for the heroic efforts of those who came to her aid, especially her marshal and her law clerk. Without them, the situation would have been much worse as this defendant exhibited extremely violent behavior, and I’m confident there will be consequences.”
The alarming incident in the Nevada courtroom has highlighted the risks faced by judges and court personnel in their roles, shedding light on the harsh realities of dealing with individuals involved in violent criminal behavior.
