Man shot and killed during dispute with ex-girlfriend’s father, deputies say

Investigators say the victim, 50, had continued living with his ex-partner’s father after the couple split.

HOUSTON, Texas — A domestic dispute turned deadly around 11 a.m. Saturday when a 71-year-old man shot and killed his daughter’s former boyfriend inside their Inverness Forest home near Pear Tree Lane and Kenchester Drive, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities identified the victim as Michael Atwood, 50. Sgt. Jason Brown said Atwood had been in a tumultuous situation at the house, where he continued living with the older man even after the daughter moved out. Investigators said the 71-year-old told deputies he fired in self-defense after an argument escalated. The account, evidence from the scene, and any recordings will be reviewed before prosecutors decide whether to file charges or present the case to a grand jury. No charges had been filed as of Saturday evening.

Deputies with Precinct 4 first alerted residents to a large police presence near the intersection shortly after the shooting. When sheriff’s deputies arrived, they found Atwood unresponsive inside the home and pronounced him dead a short time later. Brown said the investigation will look at whether any prior disturbance calls, protective orders, or mental-health interventions involved the address. “We’re still piecing together what happened inside that room and in the hours before,” Brown said, adding that the department is seeking doorbell or security video from neighbors.

Investigators collected a handgun believed to be the weapon used, along with shell casings and other physical evidence. Crime scene tape cordoned off part of Pear Tree Lane as detectives photographed the front entry and driveway and went house to house for interviews. The sheriff’s office said Atwood may have been experiencing a mental health crisis that morning, a detail that will be weighed alongside witness statements. No other injuries were reported, and officials did not disclose how many people were inside the home at the time of the shooting.

The Inverness Forest subdivision, a quiet pocket of north Harris County, has seen sporadic police calls tied to family disputes, according to neighbors, though many described the block as calm. On Saturday, residents watched from porches as marked units lined the street. “It’s unsettling because this is usually a peaceful area,” said homeowner Rita Alvarez. Another resident said deputies asked about any cars leaving quickly around 10:45 to 11:15 a.m., the window investigators are focused on as they reconstruct the timeline.

Next steps include an autopsy by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences and a case review by the district attorney’s intake prosecutors. The shooter, who was detained for questioning, is cooperating, officials said. A formal charging decision is expected after lab work and interviews are complete early next week. If the case is routed to a grand jury, a hearing date would be set in the coming weeks.

By nightfall Saturday, the scene tape was down and patrols had cleared, but detectives said they plan to return for additional canvassing and to retrieve any surveillance files neighbors agree to share.
