Greenwood, South Carolina – A man recently sentenced to prison for a violent attack on a detention officer has sparked outrage in the community. Tavon Dorsett Morton, 36, found himself in legal trouble after his bond was revoked in January 2023 on various charges, including attempted murder.
Reports from officials revealed that the incident took place on Aug. 12, 2023, when a detention officer instructed Morton to return to his cell. Ignoring the orders, Morton engaged in a heated argument with the officer before physically assaulting him. The officer was struck multiple times in the head before being forcefully slammed to the ground, causing severe injuries.
The assault left the officer unconscious, bleeding profusely, and experiencing seizures while awaiting emergency medical services. Medical records indicated the potential for severe or fatal outcomes for the officer due to the violent attack. Morton pleaded guilty to the assault and received a maximum prison sentence of 20 years for his actions.
