Newcastle, England – In a heart-wrenching incident in the early hours of October 16, a house explosion in the Benwell and Elswick area of Newcastle, took the lives of a seven-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man. Authorities have now charged a man in connection with the explosion, linking the tragedy to illegal drug activities.
Reece Galbraith, a 33-year-old from Gateshead, has been charged with two counts of manslaughter and offences related to cannabis production and supply. Police detained Galbraith on Wednesday, and he appeared at Newcastle Magistrates’ Court the following day.
In the wake of the tragedy, the community mourns the loss of young Archie York and Jay Laws. Archie, remembered by his aunt Abbie York as a joyful child with a vibrant personality, tragically lost his life in the home where he had lived since infancy. Known for his infectious grin, love of violin, and recent endeavours in swimming lessons, Archie’s death has profoundly impacted the family and community.
Further adding to the community’s grief, the family of Jay Laws, discovered deceased a day after the blast, are mourning a man celebrated by his brother Joseph as an exceptional sibling and father.
Three other individuals, two in their 30s and one in his 50s, were previously arrested in relation to the investigation. They have since been released on police bail as enquiries continue.
Taking the lead on the investigation, Detective Chief Inspector Katie Smith from Northumbria Police underlined the enormity of the tragedy and the significant progress made in the investigation. “This was a truly tragic incident in which two people died,” Smith stated. She urged the public to refrain from speculation that might undermine the legal process and appealed for anyone with further information to come forward.
This explosion not only claimed lives but also shook the community, prompting a deeper examination of residential safety in relation to illegal activities such as drug production.
