NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. — A man died after becoming unresponsive in police custody Sunday as officers investigated reports that he had been firing a rifle in a North Las Vegas neighborhood, authorities said.
North Las Vegas police responded about noon July 19 to the 6000 block of Yellowhammer Place, near Deer Springs Way and the Las Vegas Beltway. The department said callers reported a man randomly firing an AR-15-style rifle in the residential area.
Officers found and approached the man, who resisted their attempts to take him into custody, police said. Authorities said officers eventually apprehended him, but the department had not released a detailed account of the force used during the arrest as of Tuesday.
Police said the man became unresponsive after he was taken into custody. He was transported to a hospital and later pronounced dead. His identity had not been publicly released, and officials had not announced a cause or manner of death.
The sequence places the man’s medical condition and the officers’ actions during the arrest at the center of the continuing investigation. Police had not said how much time passed between the arrest and the moment he became unresponsive.
The department said impairment was suspected but did not identify a substance or provide further details. That assessment remained preliminary, and no toxicology or autopsy findings had been made public.
Video obtained by KLAS-TV appeared to show a man firing from the front porch of a home. The footage also appeared to show shots directed toward properties across the street. Several homes and vehicles were damaged, but police said no one was hit by the gunfire.
A family associated with the home told the television station that household members were away during the shooting. They said they were shaken after learning what had happened and seeing the recorded gunfire.
Authorities had not identified the officers involved in the arrest or said whether they had been placed on administrative leave. Police also had not announced whether body-camera recordings, dispatch audio or other evidence would be released.
Several central questions remained unanswered, including what caused the man to become unresponsive, whether he had a medical emergency and what role, if any, suspected impairment or the arrest itself played in his death. Those questions will depend on medical findings and the continuing review of evidence.
The shooting investigation and the review of the in-custody death remained active. Police had not provided a timetable for releasing the man’s identity, autopsy results or a fuller account of the arrest.
