Washington, DC – A Virginia man’s murder on Interstate 295 in 2015, initially believed to be a road rage incident, took a chilling turn when D.C. police unveiled details of an elaborate revenge plot in court. Pedro Melendez-Alvarado, 50, was fatally shot after a traffic altercation in Northern Virginia, leading to a pursuit by his assailant across the Woodrow Wilson Bridge onto I-295.
During a two-week trial in D.C. Superior Court, 34-year-old Oscar Ramos was convicted of first-degree murder while armed in the death of Melendez-Alvarado. Prosecutors revealed that Ramos had come to the United States from El Salvador with a mission: to avenge his father’s alleged killing by Melendez-Alvarado years earlier.
Prosecutors presented evidence that Ramos had meticulously planned the murder, using a fake Facebook account to lure Melendez-Alvarado into a trap. Ramos boasted about the killing on social media and in conversations with others, claiming retribution for his father. Despite a lack of concrete evidence linking Melendez-Alvarado to Ramos’s father’s death, Ramos proceeded with his plan to execute his revenge.
Ramos’s defense attorneys maintained his innocence throughout the trial, arguing that the prosecution lacked substantial evidence to link him to the murder. They emphasized the absence of witnesses, security camera footage, or DNA evidence implicating Ramos in the crime, casting doubt on the prosecution’s case.
Despite attempts by Ramos’s attorneys to keep his affiliation with the MS-13 gang out of the trial, the jury convicted him based on the evidence presented by prosecutors. Judge Maribeth Raffinan acknowledged the exclusion of gang affiliation evidence to prevent prejudice given that the motive for the murder was unrelated to gang activity.
