Vancouver, British Columbia – Kevin Queau, a man recently arrested in British Columbia, has been charged with the 2007 murder of 24-year-old Crystal Saunders in Manitoba. It is believed that Queau frequently visited Saskatchewan, prompting authorities to urge anyone with relevant information to come forward.
Queau, 42, was taken into custody in Vancouver and charged with second-degree murder in connection with Saunders’ death. At the time of the murder, he would have been around 25 years old. Saunders was last seen by a Winnipeg Police Service officer in 2007, getting into a vehicle at a specific location in Winnipeg. Her body was found the following morning in a marshy area by an off-duty RCMP officer.
After DNA evidence found on Saunders’ remains received a hit on the National DNA Databank in 2014, Queau was identified as a suspect. This led investigators to gather the necessary evidence to arrest and charge him years later.
Superintendent Rob Lasson, Officer in Charge of Manitoba RCMP Major Crime Services, expressed pride in the investigators’ dedication and perseverance in resolving the case. He emphasized the vulnerability of Saunders and the impact her murder had, stating, “This is about Crystal. She was well-liked and had many friends, but she also struggled. Crystal was a vulnerable person, and someone took advantage of that. We now have that person in custody.”
Queau, originally from Winnipeg, attended school in the city and is known to have frequented Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia, and Ontario. The long-term investigation spanned across western Canada and Ontario, prompting authorities to collaborate with other RCMP divisions and police agencies across the country to determine any additional linkages or connections to other unsolved crimes.
As the investigation continues, the RCMP is urging anyone with additional information on Queau or related matters to contact the RCMP tip line. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of community cooperation in bringing closure to such cases and delivering justice for the victims.
