Man Charged After 15-Year-Old Girl Killed by Stray Bullet in Round Lake Beach Home

ROUND LAKE BEACH, Ill. — Authorities have charged a local 19-year-old man in the tragic shooting death of a 15-year-old girl, who was fatally struck by a stray bullet while dining at her home in Round Lake Beach.

The Lake County Major Crime Task Force reported that Shorbonia Poole, Jr., of Round Lake Beach was found in possession of the weapon used in the incident. A search conducted at Poole’s residence last Friday led to the seizure of the firearm.

On the evening of Wednesday, the victim, identified as Valeria Rodriguez, was inside her home in the 1500-block of Cherokee Drive when the incident occurred. According to police, an unidentified shooter discharged the firearm outside of Rodriguez’s residence, with a stray bullet subsequently penetrating the dwelling and hitting the girl.

Rodriguez was quickly taken to a local hospital where she succumbed to her injuries, as confirmed by Round Lake Beach police. Investigators mentioned that the shooting seemed unintentional with Rodriguez not being the intended target.

Reacting to the devastating event, the community and Rodriguez’s family recalled happier times. Just weeks prior, they had celebrated her quinceañera, marking her transition from childhood to womanhood. Now, the incident has left her family and neighbors in profound grief and disbelief.

A neighbor, who preferred to remain anonymous, shared their shock and confusion about the tragedy. “The kids heard a pop, but they just thought it was fireworks. It’s hard to grasp how and why such a thing could happen, especially when the community was just celebrating together,” the neighbor said.

The police placed Poole in custody pending an investigation. As the local community struggles to cope with this unforeseen loss, officials continue to probe the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting, working to determine if additional suspects may be involved and the motive behind this tragic incident.

This case has highlighted ongoing concerns about gun violence affecting innocent bystanders, prompting discussions about safety measures and preventive actions in Round Lake Beach and beyond. Meanwhile, the town mourns the loss of a young life cut tragically short, as her family, friends, and neighbors seek justice and come to terms with the irreparable damage caused by a moment’s violence.
