KOTA KINABALU, Malaysia — A violent altercation stemming from a dispute over bicycle-related harassment erupted in Kampung Titigan, leading to a man being attacked with sticks and a machete on Saturday. Local authorities confirmed that the violent encounter began following a confrontation between two relatives over alleged harassment.
The incident unfolded when a local man in his 30s objected to how his nephew was being treated by another child over a bicycle. This grievance led to a face-to-face discussion with the suspect, which police said quickly escalated into a physical conflict. Tawau’s Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Jasmin Hussin, detailed that the initial verbal altercation took a violent turn when the suspect physically attacked the man.
Compounding the assault, the suspect reportedly left the scene only to return shortly with four accomplices, all armed, leading to a more severe attack involving weapons. “The group assaulted the man, significantly injuring his hands and face with sticks and a machete,” Assistant Commissioner Jasmin stated.
Police responses were swift, leading to the apprehension of the principal suspect, identified as a foreign national, within hours of the attack. Officers also confiscated the weapons thought to be used in the assault. However, efforts to locate and arrest the remaining individuals involved in the incident are ongoing.
This case has drawn particular attention due to its violent nature and the use of dangerous weapons, prompting an investigation under Section 324 of the Penal Code, which deals with causing harm by such means. In light of the occurrence and ongoing investigation, the Tawau police chief made a public appeal urging residents to seek peaceful resolutions to disputes. “Let’s resolve disputes through proper channels instead of resorting to violence,” he advocated.
The community’s reaction has been one of shock and a call for stronger measures to prevent such instances in the future. Local leaders and residents are emphasizing the importance of dialogue and legal processes in resolving conflicts, particularly when they involve younger members of the community.
This incident not only highlights the potential for minor disputes to escalate into serious crimes but also reflects ongoing issues around community safety and the need for effective conflict resolution strategies. Community safety programs and increased awareness about the legal implications of using violence in disputes might be crucial steps in preventing similar instances moving forward. As the police continue to search for the other suspects, the local community remains hopeful for justice and a reaffirmation of peace and safety in their neighborhood.
