New York, NY – Police in the South Bronx have made an arrest in connection to a violent assault and rape following the circulation of a disturbing video online. The incident took place on May 1st on East 152nd Street near Courtland Avenue in Melrose.
The video, captured by surveillance cameras, shows the suspect ambushing a woman with a belt, wrapping it around her neck, and dragging her to the ground. The victim appears to be rendered unconscious as the attacker then proceeds to rape her, positioning her body between two parked cars.
As a result of the attack, the victim was taken to the hospital for treatment and has since been released. The video of the assault was shared online, prompting a swift response from law enforcement, leading to the arrest of the suspect.
Kashaan Parks, 39, was apprehended on Saturday and is facing charges of rape, assault, strangulation, sex abuse, public lewdness, and harassment. Authorities have not specified when Parks will appear in court. The victim informed police that while she recognized Parks from the neighborhood, she did not have a personal relationship with him.
Despite the arrest, residents in the neighborhood remain on edge, with one neighbor expressing concern for their safety. “If it could happen to her, it could happen to anybody and that we’re not safe. None of us are safe, and it’s been like that for a while, but it just feels like… I’m scared now that the weather is going to get hot, that the crime is going to get worse. So yeah, I feel bad for her. I hope she’s OK,” said Christina Torres.
The community is still reeling from the incident, highlighting the importance of vigilance and safety in the neighborhood. The arrest of the suspect brings a sense of relief, but concerns about safety persist as residents remain wary of potential threats in the area.
