Chicago, Illinois – A judge in Chicago ruled on Saturday that Dontrell Anderson, a man accused of murdering a pregnant woman on the city’s South Side, will remain in custody until his trial. Chicago police apprehended the 26-year-old suspect in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, and charged him with murder and concealing a homicide.
Authorities reported that Anderson allegedly strangled and fatally shot 24-year-old Itzel Camarena during her visit to his family’s apartment in the Chatham neighborhood. Camarena, who was six months pregnant, tragically lost her life on February 18. Prosecutors revealed that Anderson was captured on surveillance dragging Camarena’s body, wrapped in a sheet, into an alley. A bloody couch cushion was discovered at the scene, although no weapon was mentioned in reports.
Camarena’s body was found between two trash cans near Anderson’s family residence. At a court hearing, a Cook County judge determined that Anderson posed a public safety risk, prompting his continued detainment. Camarena’s family, seeking justice for their daughter, questioned the motives behind the brutal act and expressed devastation over her untimely demise.
Anderson’s public defender claimed that while Anderson admitted to being present during the incident, he denied involvement in the murder.
