Los Angeles, California – Following a series of violent attacks in the Venice Canals area, a man accused of assaulting two women faces a murder charge after one of the victims tragically passed away. Anthony Francisco Jones, 29, now has the additional charge which includes special circumstances of forcible rape and sodomy during the crime, as per the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
Initially, Jones was charged with multiple offenses including forcible rape, sexual penetration by force, mayhem, torture, attempted murder, and sodomy using force. The decision to add the murder charge came after one of the victims succumbed to her injuries on May 24.
District Attorney George Gascón expressed determination to seek justice for the victims, stating that the murder charge could lead to a sentence of life in prison without parole, in addition to the other charges previously filed. The violent attacks occurred on the night of April 6, leading to Jones’ arrest in San Diego a few days later when he attempted to flee.
Jones is scheduled to appear in court on June 11 at the Airport Branch Courthouse, where a hearing will determine if there is sufficient evidence for a trial. He remains in custody without bail, awaiting further legal proceedings.
