GENEVA, Switzerland – Lead, a naturally occurring toxic metal, has caused extensive environmental contamination, human exposure, and significant public health issues worldwide. Sources of contamination include mining, manufacturing, recycling activities, and the production of lead-acid batteries for motor vehicles. Although lead is commonly used in various products such as paints, toys, and traditional cosmetics, exposure to this metal has particularly harmful effects on young children, affecting their brain development and leading to long-term health problems in adults.
In addition to its impact on the environment, lead exposure is a significant public health issue. This metal can have severe consequences for the health of children, leading to reduced intelligence, behavioral changes, and increased risk of various health issues. Furthermore, lead exposure is estimated to have caused nearly half of the 2 million lives lost to known chemical exposure in 2019, making it a major global health concern.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has taken action to address the issue of lead exposure, recognizing it as one of 10 chemicals of major public health concern. The successful phase-out of leaded gasoline in most countries has resulted in significant public health benefits, demonstrating the effectiveness of lead control measures. However, efforts to phase out lead paint in many countries are still ongoing, highlighting the need for further action to address this source of exposure.
In response to the ongoing challenge of lead exposure, WHO has developed guidelines on clinical management of lead exposure and is preparing guidelines on the prevention of lead exposure, aiming to provide evidence-based guidance for policy-makers and public health authorities. Additionally, WHO has joined forces with the United Nations Environment Programme to form the Global Alliance to Eliminate Lead Paint, working towards encouraging all countries to have legally binding laws to control the use of lead in paint.
Despite progress in addressing lead exposure, the issue remains a significant concern, particularly for the most vulnerable populations. Efforts to eliminate lead exposure and protect the health of children and adults from its harmful effects will require continued collaboration and action at the global, national, and local levels.
