Lucky to Be Alive: Survivor of Aliamanu Fireworks Tragedy Leaves Hospital to Visit Blast Site

ALIAMANU, Hawaii — A community in Aliamanu is beginning to see the slow release of some lucky survivors from the hospital after a New Year’s fireworks incident that shook their festive gathering, causing severe injuries and fatalities. Amidst the returned is a man, evidence of the trauma marked by visible burns and extensive bandaging, who, upon discharge, visited the wreckage of his neighbor’s home where the disaster unfolded.

The man, whose identity is withheld at his family’s request, shared his harrowing experience during the casual neighborhood celebration that quickly turned disastrous. “I was right there in the garage when it happened,” he said, shaking his head in disbelief. “Somehow, I’m still here. I’m one of the lucky ones.”

He recounted how, unenthusiastic about fireworks but joining in the festivities at his neighbor’s invitation, his night took a dramatic and almost deadly turn. Moments before the clock struck midnight, a powerful explosion catapulted him against the garage’s rear wall, a factor he believes might have ironically spared his life.

“I remember checking the time on my phone, and then, just bang — total chaos,” he explained. “I hit the ground hard. But I managed to stand up and escape… walking away felt unreal, like moving through a nightmare.”

His account details surviving not only the physical blast but the subsequent shock of realizing the extent of the disaster. The man was rushed to a hospital with serious burns and injuries, amongst others hurt or fatally wounded by the explosion.

Reflecting on his unexpected survival, he expresses a mixture of relief and somber gratitude. “It’s nothing short of a miracle,” he said. “I’ve cried knowing not everyone made it out. But I’m here, walking on my own two feet, and that’s something I don’t take for granted.”

When pressed on whether he feels fortunate, he confirmed with a solemn nod, “Yes, very lucky.”

This incident starkly highlights the inherent dangers of private fireworks displays, which, while a popular part of many celebrations, carry risks of accidents and severe injuries. Fireworks safety protocols remain a crucial topic, urging both the public and authorities to reevaluate and enforce preventative measures more rigorously, ensuring festive occasions are safely enjoyed by all community members.
