Louisiana ‘Superfog’ Pileup Death Toll Revised Down by Louisiana State Police After Intense Fire and Extensive Wreckage

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana – A series of vehicle crashes led to a devastating multi-car pileup on Interstate 55 west of New Orleans, resulting in several deaths and numerous injuries. The tragic event was caused by a combination of low visibility due to wildfire smoke and dense fog, a phenomenon commonly known as “superfog.”

Initially reported as 7 fatalities, the death toll was later revised to 8. However, it was ultimately reduced by one after additional forensics evidence was examined. The intense fire and extensive wreckage caused initial confusion, leading to the revised count of casualties, according to Louisiana State Police.

The aftermath of the crashes left mangled, burned vehicles strewn across the highway, with at least 63 people injured. The affected area of the interstate remained partially open after the cleanup commenced, which included the removal of the final group of vehicles on Tuesday morning.

The cleanup efforts were further complicated by a tanker truck carrying hazardous material that caught fire. According to reports, around 100 people were stranded on the interstate due to the smoke and resulting low visibility.

The chain of events that led to the pileup was exacerbated by wildfire smoke from marsh fires and dense early morning fog, creating “superfog” conditions that severely limited visibility. This hazardous combination resulted in several miles of low visibility conditions along I-55 northwest of New Orleans, impacting various areas between Ponchatoula and LaPlace.

Authorities are urging anyone involved or with information regarding the crashes to come forward, while Governor John Bel Edwards called for blood donations to help treat the wounded.

The incident serves as a reminder of the dangers posed by weather-related hazards and the importance of safe driving practices, particularly in adverse conditions. This unfortunate event highlights the need for continued vigilance and preparedness to ensure the safety of all motorists.
