Los Angeles, CA — A routine trip to buy groceries turned into a traumatic ordeal for Maurice Benaim, a Los Angeles resident, who was viciously assaulted by a mob of teenage cyclists in central Los Angeles. The attack, which occurred while Benaim was navigating through traffic near San Vicente Boulevard and Carillo Drive, resulted in significant physical and emotional scars.
Benaim recounted the evening’s initial simplicity before the assault, noting that his intentions were merely to purchase tangerine juice and watch a Lakers game. However, events took a grim turn when he encountered around 20 to 30 teenagers obstructing the roadway with their bicycles. According to Benaim, he sounded his vehicle’s horn to signal an approaching light change, which apparently provoked the group.
The situation rapidly escalated as one teenager threatened he had a gun and proceeded to vandalize Benaim’s car, smashing the right taillight. When Benaim exited his vehicle to confront the group, he was overpowered, pushed to the ground, and subjected to a barrage of kicks and punches.
Witnesses eventually intervened, and the teenagers fled the scene, leaving Benaim injured in the street. He suffered multiple injuries to his face and head, resulting in a prominent bruise on his upper right eyelid. The psychological aftermath of the attack has also been challenging for Benaim, causing sleep disturbances and necessitating therapy.
Soon after the incident, Benaim’s family initiated a GoFundMe campaign to cover the costs of his medical care and psychological support, as well as repairs to his vehicle. The fundraiser aims to accumulate $22,000, part of which will assist in pursuing legal action against the attackers. Benaim’s brother, Judah, emphasized the emotional weight of the incident in the fundraiser description, calling for community support to help Maurice regain a sense of safety and justice.
In response to the attack, the Los Angeles Police Department’s Wilshire Area officers made arrests on Feb. 26. Two juveniles connected with the episode were apprehended following a tip-off to law enforcement. Specific details about their identities and charges have not been disclosed by the police.
Reflecting on the arrests, Benaim expressed hope that this development would serve as a deterrent to further violent acts among youth in the community. He stressed the importance of renouncing violence and fostering a safer environment for everyone in Los Angeles.
This incident highlights a growing concern over youth violence and the need for more robust interventions to prevent such occurrences and effectively address their aftermath. Community members and authorities alike are urged to collaborate closely to enhance safety measures and provide adequate support systems for victims of such unprovoked attacks.
