Long Island Man Indicted for Brutal Murder with Crowbar in Front of Young Child

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. — A man from Long Island faces a second-degree murder charge after allegedly using a crowbar to fatally assault another man in an incident that reportedly unfolded in front of a young child. According to Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney, the suspect, 46-year-old Darrell Trent of Bellport, is accused of killing 45-year-old Carlos Bonaparte outside Bonaparte’s home in East Patchogue in May 2025.

Tierney described the attack as particularly heinous, emphasizing that such violence has no place in the community. “We are committed to ensuring that the defendant is held accountable and that justice is served for the victim and their family,” he stated.

The alleged murder occurred early on May 18, around 2:45 a.m., while Bonaparte was outside with his young daughter. The situation escalated when Bonaparte became involved in a verbal confrontation with one of his girlfriend’s cousins. That cousin reportedly contacted Trent, who arrived shortly thereafter, armed with what witnesses described as a crowbar.

Eyewitnesses claim that Trent exited his vehicle and attacked Bonaparte, striking him in the head with the weapon’s claw end, piercing his skull and causing life-threatening injuries. Emergency responders transported Bonaparte to Long Island Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Following the incident, Trent allegedly fled the area and was apprehended days later in Shaker Heights, Ohio. He was arrested on May 23 and was formally charged on June 9, when he appeared before Acting County Court Justice James McDonaugh. During that hearing, McDonaugh ordered him to be held without bail as the case proceeds, with a court date set for July 2.

Trent’s attorney, Matthew Touhey, addressed the media, stating that there are numerous complexities surrounding the case. “We are actively investigating significant factual issues and various defenses,” he remarked. Touhey also added that Trent continues to assert his innocence regarding the charges levied against him.

The shocking incident has prompted discussions within the community about violence and its devastating impact, especially when children are present. Local residents express their hopes for justice in the wake of this tragedy, highlighting the need for safety and accountability. As the case unfolds, the community watches closely, anticipating the outcomes in court and the broader implications for public safety.
