Local Man Charged with Aggravated Arson After Allegedly Setting Fire to Home, Endangering Neighbors

CAROL STREAM, Ill. — A man in DuPage County is facing multiple charges, including aggravated arson, after he allegedly set fire to his own residence in a dangerous act that resulted in nearby explosions and significant damage to surrounding homes. Authorities reported that Eric Neuman, 52, was apprehended following a police pursuit that took him several miles away from the scene of the blaze.

The incident unfolded early Saturday morning around 4:30 a.m., when local police received calls about a fire in the 700 block of Hemlock Lane. Upon arriving on the scene, responders discovered flames engulfing Neuman’s home, which he shared with his estranged wife. Investigators later found that Neuman had strategically placed multiple gas containers, totaling approximately 40 gallons, throughout the property, alongside propane tanks stored within a rental vehicle in the garage.

Allegedly, Neuman doused parts of the garage with gasoline and ignited a flare before discarding it inside. Text messages sent to his wife purportedly included detailed threats about his plans to cause a massive explosion, outlining how he would manipulate gas lines and create an explosive scenario. Prosecutors noted that he had indicated an awareness of the nearby residents, including children, while engaging in this reckless behavior.

Miraculously, no injuries were reported amid the chaos. Following the incident, Neuman was arrested by Illinois State Police in Mahomet, near Champaign, after a pursuit initiated in the Bloomington/Morton area.

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin condemned Neuman’s actions, emphasizing the inherent danger posed not just to residents but also to first responders. Berlin expressed that such reckless behavior would not be tolerated, vowing to hold Neuman accountable to the fullest extent of the law.

Neuman has been charged with two counts of aggravated arson, one count of arson, and criminal damage to property. A judge ordered him to remain in custody while awaiting his next court appearance scheduled for September 22. As investigators continue to examine the motivations behind this frightening act, the community remains shaken by the potential devastation narrowly averted that morning.
