Washington, D.C. – The owner and staff of a Washington, D.C. day care center were hailed as heroes over the weekend for their quick actions in rescuing 16 children from a gas explosion back in January. The DC Fire department and Mayor Muriel Bowser recognized the childcare center for their bravery in saving the lives of the young children.
Regina Snead, the owner of Baby Einstein Child Development Center, expressed that the safety of the children is always their top priority. She emphasized the importance of their regular emergency training, ensuring that in a crisis, they are well-prepared to evacuate the children safely.
The incident took place on January 18, in the Anacostia neighborhood, when a powerful gas explosion devastated the area. Among the structures damaged was the day care center, adjacent to a convenience store that was leveled by the blast.
Once the staff detected the smell of gas, they wasted no time in evacuating the building, ensuring that all 16 children, ranging from 2 months to 4 years old, were safely taken to a secure location. Their quick thinking and decisive actions led to no injuries among the children.
In recognition of their heroic efforts, the daycare center was presented with awards by the local fire department, highlighting their dedication to protecting the youngest members of the community. DC Fire Chief John Donnelly commended the staff for their exceptional skills and readiness in handling the emergency situation with utmost care.
Regina Snead humbly accepted the recognition, stating that she and her team were just doing their duty. She acknowledged that it took a special set of people and skills to ensure the safety of the children, reflecting the importance of having well-trained staff in such critical situations.
