Life Sentence for Man in Hastings After Unprovoked Stabbing Spree at Local Restaurant

Hastings, England – An appalling assault at a late-night eatery in Havelock Road transformed a normal evening into a scene of chaos and violence, when a man armed with a knife randomly attacked two patrons and a woman who tried to intervene. The incident, which unfolded around 2:40 a.m. on October 19 last year, left three people hospitalized, one with severe injuries including a collapsed lung.

The assailant, identified as 46-year-old Nicky Warnes, of no fixed address, was arrested shortly after the attacks following a quick response from local police. He faced serious charges for his actions, including three counts of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and one count of carrying a bladed article in a public place.

The violence reportedly began when Warnes made threats towards the two men who were previously unknown to him. According to a victim’s statement, there was no apparent provocation as they merely walked past Warnes before he launched into his aggressive behavior. It escalated rapidly from verbal altercations to physical violence when Warnes drew a knife and stabbed the men in the chest. A brave woman working nearby leaped into action in an attempt to stop him but became a victim herself, suffering a stab wound to the arm.

In an attempt to dispose of the evidence, Warnes hid the knife in a bin inside the restaurant. However, his efforts were thwarted as the weapon was recovered by the officers, further solidifying his link to the crime.

Following his arrest, Warnes appeared before Lewes Crown Court where he pleaded guilty to all charges in November of the same year. His trial concluded at Hove Crown Court on March 19, where he was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of eight years.

The long-term effects on the victims have been profound, as they continue to deal with the physical and emotional aftermath of that night. One articulated ongoing pain and nightmares that persist months after the attack, whereas the other victims are still undergoing treatment for their injuries.

Detective Sergeant Auryn Liddiard, speaking after the sentencing, emphasized the severity of the attack, praising the woman’s courageous intervention and the swift action of the police officers patrolling the area at the time. Liddiard stressed the importance of the evidence gathered, which left Warnes with no option but to admit his guilt promptly when confronted with the solid proof of his heinous act during his trial.

The conviction brought some relief to the local community, demonstrating the effectiveness of the judicial system in dealing with violent crimes and reinforcing the message that individuals who choose to engage in such acts will face substantial penalties. The case also highlighted the critical roles that ordinary citizens and law enforcement play in maintaining public safety.
