Leicester, England — A 20-year-old man, Denon Taylor, has been sentenced to three years in prison following a violent attack on two police officers who responded to reports of criminal damage. Taylor was convicted of grievous bodily harm and non-fatal strangulation after kicking and assaulting the officers during the incident last September.
The chaos unfolded when officers arrived at Cort Crescent to investigate reports of individuals damaging vehicles. According to Leicestershire Police, Taylor intervened as officers attempted to arrest a suspect, assisting the individual in evading capture. During the scuffle, Taylor put one officer in a headlock and then violently threw a second officer, resulting in her sustaining serious injuries.
The first officer suffered cuts to her hands and bruises on her knee and face. The second officer endured a broken jaw, a split gum, and lost one tooth upon landing face-first on the ground; she eventually had to have four additional teeth removed due to the severity of her injuries.
On July 9, Taylor was sentenced to prison, which includes charges for burglary and theft. The gravity of his actions elicited a strong response from police officials. Temporary Chief Constable David Sandall emphasized the unacceptable nature of such violence against emergency workers, acknowledging the risks they face daily while protecting the community.
Sandall urged the public to stand behind emergency personnel, stating that every report of abuse will be taken seriously and that offenders will face prosecution. He expressed a desire for a supportive environment where officers can perform their duties without fear of violence.
Detective Constable Tom Rockett, who led the investigation, reiterated the level of aggression shown toward the officers and the lasting impact the incident may have on them. He stressed the department’s commitment to pursuing those who perpetrate such acts against law enforcement.
The case serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers faced by officers and the need for community support to foster a safer environment for those in emergency roles. The community’s response to such incidents could help ensure the protection and respect that all emergency service workers deserve.
