LANCASTER, Ohio — A local man is facing a multitude of charges including aggravated murder following a violent incident last month that left two family members dead and another injured, as stated by Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost.
Kyle Varney, 26, has been formally charged with an array of 18 felony offenses. The charges encompass two counts of aggravated murder, four counts of murder, and one count of attempted aggravated murder. Additional charges include two counts of attempted murder, six counts of felonious assault, and three counts involving the improper discharge of a firearm at or into a habitation or in a school safety zone.
The events leading to these charges unfolded on Feb. 25 when Lancaster police received an emergency call concerning a behavioral crisis at a residence located in the 1200 block of North Broad Street.
Officials recounted that upon their arrival, a distressing scene quickly escalated. A woman, in a desperate state, approached a police officer in his vehicle seeking help. At that moment, Varney, identified to be about 90 feet from the officer’s location, began shooting towards a female at the scene. The officer on site responded by firing back at Varney.
Lancaster Police Chief Nicholas Snyder confirmed that Varney was apprehended and urgently taken for medical attention due to the critical nature of his injuries sustained during the altercation.
Further investigations at the scene revealed more grim findings. After additional police units arrived, they discovered a woman outside the home with a severe gunshot wound to her head. She was promptly transported to a hospital where she underwent treatment.
A subsequent search of the home led to the discovery of two deceased men, both of whom had suffered fatal gunshot wounds, according to Chief Snyder.
In response to these tragic events, the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation has taken the lead in probing the circumstances surrounding the deaths of the two men. Additionally, a distinct probe into the exchange of gunfire that involved the police is currently active.
This case has stirred considerable attention and underscores ongoing concerns surrounding gun violence and its effects on communities across the state. The investigations remain active, as legal proceedings against Varney prepare to move forward under the close scrutiny of local and state authorities.
