Bengaluru, India — The city has reported its fourth Covid-19-related death this month, following the passing of a 63-year-old man with serious underlying health conditions. Health officials announced the man’s death on May 29, highlighting ongoing concerns about the virus’s impact in the region.
The patient, who had been fully vaccinated, was admitted to a private hospital on May 21 after experiencing notable fatigue. Despite receiving medical care, his health rapidly declined over eight days. His medical history included advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the buccal mucosa and pulmonary tuberculosis, conditions that complicated his treatment.
Authorities noted that the cause of death was attributed to several factors, including thrombosis and complications from cancer cachexia, alongside the patient’s Covid-positive status, which was identified incidentally. This death marks the continuation of a troubling trend in Karnataka as hospitals treat a growing number of Covid cases.
Earlier in the month, two other Covid-related fatalities were reported in Mysuru, both involving men of the same age. The first was a 63-year-old who died on May 2, while another succumbed to complications related to Covid-19 on May 25, following a 10-day hospitalization. Both patients faced pre-existing health issues, which exacerbated their conditions during infection.
As of May 31, Karnataka reported 238 active Covid cases statewide, with a positivity rate of 13.8%. The state conducted 420 tests on Saturday, yielding 58 new confirmed cases. The current case fatality rate stands at 1.7%, a statistic that has local health officials on alert as they monitor the virus’s evolving landscape.
With ongoing vaccinations and public health measures in place, the government urges residents to remain vigilant. “Even with high vaccination rates, underlying health conditions can significantly elevate risks associated with Covid-19,” a health official emphasized. As Karnataka navigates this challenging phase, officials continue to stress the importance of preventive measures amid fluctuating daily case numbers.
