Richmond, Va. – A K-9 has tragically lost its life while heroically protecting a correctional officer from a violent gang-related attack, according to Virginia prison officials.
The K-9, named Rivan, a 5-year-old Belgian Malinois, succumbed to injuries sustained during an altercation involving three inmates affiliated with the MS-13 gang at the Sussex I State Prison. The inmates allegedly attacked another inmate, with one overseeing the assault, prompting Corrections Officer Kharmishia Phillip Fields and Rivan to intervene.
Despite being violently stabbed and kicked by the assailants, Rivan’s actions allowed Officer Phillip Fields to escape unharmed, showcasing the dog’s bravery and training. The inmates were subdued, and the injured inmate received medical treatment before being returned to the prison.
Virginia Department of Corrections Director Chad Dotson praised Rivan’s sacrifice, emphasizing that the K-9’s actions potentially saved two lives that day. The inmates involved, confirmed as MS-13 members, were said to be in the country illegally and were serving time for serious offenses, including first-degree homicide and attempted rape.
