Kintrye, Jamaica — Two men were found guilty last week for their roles in a violent attack on a motorist following a traffic accident in St. Andrew. Romario Smith and Dillion James, both facing multiple charges, were convicted in the Supreme Court on Thursday.
Their convictions include charges of Shooting with Intent, Wounding with Intent, Possession of a Prohibited Weapon, and Using a Firearm to Commit a Felony. The court has scheduled sentencing for February 13 of the upcoming year.
The incident in question dates back to August 2024, when a collision occurred involving the complainant and James’s son on Hope River Street. Following the crash, an argument between the individuals escalated into violence. In the ensuing confrontation, James reportedly attacked the complainant with a machete, inflicting severe injuries to his left hand.
During the altercation, Smith, a cousin of James, drew a firearm and fired at the complainant. Fortunately, the victim managed to evade being shot and later sought medical attention. He spent two days in recovery at the University Hospital of the West Indies due to his injuries.
The incident was promptly reported to local authorities at the Half Way Tree Police station. Subsequent investigations led to the apprehension of both suspects in separate police operations. Following their arrest, they were officially charged, culminating in last week’s court proceedings.
The case underscores ongoing concerns about violent crime and the use of firearms in Jamaica, highlighting the challenges law enforcement faces in addressing such incidents.
